Just browsed through this article today that gives a direct-to-the-point method of getting backlinks from university websites (.edu extensions) every hour. The steps are actually pretty simple, and anybody (at least the way I see it) can follow it without getting confused. The best part is, you can use it to promote any type of website… and use it again, and again, if you like. It’s a great idea, if you ask me. I’ll give you the link later on so you can get your own copy of the report. But before that…
What is a backlink? Do backlinks matter?
Backlinks are inbound links or incoming links “coming” from a website to a certain website or webpage. For example, if my site links to your site, then your site has a backlink from me. A site with many backlinks indicate that it is a very popular site or that it must be important somehow (or no one would link to it). Don’t confuse this with link exchange, because it’s different. Most of the time, when we say backlink we’re referring to a one-way link–a link that doesn’t need to be returned back (i.e. reciprocal linking, link exchange, etc.). With regards to search engines like Google, SE’s thinks of a back link as a vote for your website. So if you have a website about freelancing and other freelance websites are linking to your site, then Google will think that your site must be important because other related sites are linking to yours.
Why bother getting backlinks from .edu extensions?
Below is a response from the makers of the report themselves. I can’t say it any better so here it goes:
These links are considered to be “gold” by many SEOs. There is evidence that Google looks favorably upon these links since your site is connected with more “pure” web sites. Having your site associated with non-commercial web sites (like .edu sites) is smart business.

[...] For viral marketing and free traffic purposes, there’s no doubt about the benefits of submitting your articles to the popular article directories on the net. By publishing your articles on the top article directories, you increase the chance of your article getting picked up by webmasters who are looking to add content to their own sites. When they reprint these articles of yours, they’ll have to include a resource box with your name and info as the author, along with a link to your own websites or affiliate sites. You therefore get free traffic in return. You’ll receive quality backlinks as well, resulting in better search engine placement. [...]
