OutSmart MagazineOutSmart Magazine, the leading GLBT monthly media in the State of Texas, is expanding and seeks an experienced Managing Editor with the spirit and drive to advance our publications to the next level. The Managing Editor has leadership qualities and is highly skilled in multi-tasking, prioritizing and creative development. He/she communicates effectively to achieve OutSmart Magazine goals, cultivates positive relationships and embraces diversity; oversees freelance and in-house editorial staff to produce high quality publications on schedule. The Managing Editor ensures editorial standards as well as deadlines are met and is hands-on through all phases of the editorial/production process including planning publication content and layout; assigning, editing and tracking articles; writing articles as necessary; approving final pages and quality assurance of publication prior to shipping to printer.

OUR MANAGING EDITOR WILL:

• Implement standards and policies to ensure that the publication is factually and grammatically correct; maintain quality control for assigned publications, supplements and other special projects.

• Synchronize efforts of freelance and other staff, set editorial schedule to correlate with art/design production, and coordinate article acquisition process. Establish and reinforce measurable goals, identify and remove obstacles, evaluate and monitor progress, make adjustments as needed.

• Facilitate article acquisition process through regular correspondence with authors and others interested in contributing articles, clarifying publication policies, addressing issues and coordinating schedules.

• Copyedit manuscripts; write editorials, articles, and miscellaneous copy as appropriate; in print and online writing responsibilities are required.

• Train, coach, and provide feedback to freelance writers as well as editorial staff members and act in a management capacity.

• Confer directly with publisher to formulate publication strategies, plan production, develop budgets; discuss topics for self-generated articles and other projects; and brainstorm business development opportunities. Attend events and represent OutSmart Magazine within the community.

REQUIRED:
• Degree in Journalism, English, Communications or other relevant field or commensurate experience.
• Three to five years of relevant journalism/writing experience.
• Demonstrated organizational and project management skills, including the ability to work in a deadline-oriented environment.
• Demonstrated competency in use of editing and proofreading skills to resolve stylistic, grammatical, and form of written material.
• Proficiency with desktop publishing word processing software and knowledgeable in effective use of graphic design.
• Excellent written and oral communications skills.
• Self-motivated and able to work independently and with minimal direction.
• Industry and trade show experience preferred.
• Web site content development experience preferred.
