How To Write For Web Readers

All of us need reminders now and then about how to keep our writing fresh and sharp. Blogs are still an evolving medium, and we each come to blogging with past experiences in writing, some of which will work in the blogsphere, and some of which will not. Here are a few tips on how to improve your blog copy:

1. Headline is important – The first thing that your visitors will notice is your blog post titles. While it’s great to use clever titles sometimes, make sure you have enough clear and concise titles, so visitors don’t have to search very far to know what your blog posts are about.

2. Use Images – Images are a great way to break up a text heavy blog post. They can help to draw attention to a specific post and add color to your blog. Don’t use too many images though, or your posts get cluttered and your text gets harder to read rather than easier.

3. Write at an 8th grade level – You don’t have to dumb-it-down, but keep your article easy to read and avoid complicated words and really long sentences. It’s not that you think your readers are unintelligent – you’re keeping it simple because of the attention span factor of your potential audience.

4. Make Lists – Bulleted and numbered lists work equally well in turning text that could be published as long paragraphs into easily scannable content. Use lists whenever you can to break up long blocks of text.

5. Cut the boring parts – Unless you’re writing for personal reasons alone, you need to consider the attention of your readers. There’s no point is publishing content that isn’t useful, interesting, or both.

6. Keep it short and simple, sweetie. (KISS) – Most people are scanners. You may have a lot to say and think it interesting, and it may be. But people are reading online and out of time. Get to the point quickly. Publishing short posts more frequently is a better format than publishing lengthy articles every few weeks.

In any case, don’t let these guidelines keep you from blogging – the most important thing is to keep writing. If you write with passion and conviction, you’ll be able to connect with other people, and your writing will improve every time you post.
