What is the best way to learn from mistakes other than learning it from the experience of others. Here are some of the mistakes that I see many new bloggers are making, and in which I have made myself in the past.

1. Choosing a topic you have no interest in – For your blog to be successful you’ll need to blog regularly on your topic for years – if you want to sustain it choose something you have an interest in or love for or you’ll run out of steam.

2. Putting off starting a blog – While planning is all good, what really matters in the end of the day is taking action. Waiting for the right moment means you never do it. And if I may add, the longer you take you make your blog, the stronger the competition.

3. Expecting readers to come to you – The blog world is amazing because of the reader interaction and it’s the reason why I continue to publish on a consistent basis. When I first started out I had no idea how to attract new readers, commenters, interaction etc. I had the impression that if I published new content I’d automatically find readers in my niche.

4. Not blogging on your own domain – Is bad. While I know some swear by using hosted blogs but if you want ultimate control of your blog it is best to do it on your own domain and hosting. Personally, unless you run a personal blog, I think you should always opt for self hosted blog, to appear professional.

5. Great posts but terrible titles – Don’t short change yourself by investing hours into writing great content only to slap a mediocre headline/title onto it. No matter how good your posts are, unless you have terrific headlines, readers will hardly go through the post.

6. Expecting too much, too soon – Blogging isn’t a sprint, it’s a marathon. Your blog won’t be an overnight success, and for the first few months it might feel like you’re writing for no one. It can take time to build up your readership and have a regular community of people who participate on your blog. Don’t expect immediate returns from your blog and do expect to put in a lot of hard work.

7. 7Choosing the wrong blogging platform – Make sure you choose the right blog platform when you start out blogging. My recommendation would be WordPress because it has so many Plugins and is so flexible. You don’t want to get a year down the line and end up having to transfer all your posts, content etc over to another platform.

That’s all for my 7 blogging mistakes. Although I’m pretty sure there is a lot more out there, I think the best strategy is to learn as you go, and don’t be too harsh on yourself. Life is an experiment after all.
